U.S. Creates Intelligence Desk on Venezuela

The U.S. government announced this week that it has established a “mission manager” within the National Intelligence Office to focus specifically on Venezuela and Cuba. The move is a strong signal that the Bush administration is prioritizing anti-Venezuela activities in the lead up to the December 3 elections.

To put this in context, it is important to understand that currently only Iran and North Korea have similar spy desks. In effect, U.S. intelligence officers are equating Venezuela’s democracy with totalitarian regimes, and funneling already extended intelligence resources away from countries that may pose an actual threat to the United States.
